“Tell me again, why am I having dinner with Archer Wingate and his girlfriend?” Weber asked. “Don’t I get enough of him at work?”

“Because we’re trying to make Kallie Jo feel welcome,” Mary told him. “Now you be nice.”

“I’m always nice,” Weber told her. “When am I not nice?”

“I’m looking forward to this,” Pete Caitlin said. “Wait until you see that girl eat. She’ll put Parks here to shame. And she never misses a beat, still talking at a hundred miles an hour all the while.”

“Pete! I’m warning you…”

“Oh, hush woman. You know it’s the truth.”

“Yes, it is the truth, but you know you like her just as much as I do.”

“Well hell, woman, I never said I didn’t like her. I like Parks too, but that don’t mean he’s perfect, not by a damned sight! I’m just telling the straight facts.”

“My Mama thinks I'm perfect,” Parks said petulantly as he reached for a hot roll Mary had just taken out of the oven.

She slapped his hand and said, “You just wait until dinner!”

“I haven’t seen Kallie Jo eat,” Robyn said, “but she sure can talk. I didn't know what the heck was going on when she grabbed hold of me. And I still don’t know what she meant with all that stuff about me loving Archer, and stepping aside. What was that all about?”

“What it was about was that our boy Archer seems to have quite an imagination,” Weber said. “Apparently he's been feeding Kallie Joe a line of crapola that stretches all the way from here back to Georgia. I don't know who's dumber, him for saying all of that or her for believing it.”

“I don't think Archer’s dumb at all,” Parks said. “I think he’s brilliant. The dumb stuff is all an act. He's got us all believing he's the village idiot, so he gets away with all kinds of stuff. And it turns out he's devious as all get out. That boy should quit playing cop and start writing fiction, because he's got talent for it.”

“Hey, it may have been a line of bullshit, but it worked,” Pete said, “he got her to come way out here with those stories of his.”

“Now you all be nice,” Mary chided them. “Sure, Archer told a lot of tall tales, but who was he hurting? And don't you forget, Pete Caitlin, you’ve told a few whoppers in your life, too!”

“Those were all fishing stories, Pete argued. “A man's gotta tell fishing lies or he’s not worth being out on the lake with.”

“Well, whatever he told that girl, it looks like she's here to stay,” Weber said.

“Say what you will,” Mary said, “no matter how it started out, love is a beautiful thing.”

“Why, you're just a hopeless romantic,” Robyn told her with a smile.

“Of course she thinks love is a beautiful thing,” Pete said. “She married me! How could it be anything but beautiful?”

“Yeah, it's beautiful,” Mary agreed as she bustled around the kitchen getting the final preparations for dinner done.
